Farmers For America

Farmers For America

With its locally-oriented food economy, Saxapahaw is a natural venue for a film that champions the causes of local food systems. The documentary addresses the major question facing American agriculture in the next 15 years: Who will feed us? With an average age of 60 among today’s farmers, and with 50 percent of American farmland destined to change hands in the next 15 years, the film features farmers from across the country who are creating alternative answers to the way we get most of our food today.

The documentary traces the remarkable shifts coming to American agriculture as more and more consumers flock to farmers’ markets, embrace farm-to-table lifestyles and insist on knowing where their food comes from. At the center of the film are the farmers, young and old, who provide the spirit and energy to bring urban and rural America together over what both share in common: our food.

The film is narrated by popular TV host and podcaster Mike Rowe (Dirty Jobs, Returning the Favor). The film premiered last October during the FFA national convention in Indianapolis, and has been screened widely throughout the country.

Reverence Farms Cafe will be catering the screening which will include pulled pork sandwiches with pastured pork from Reverence Farms. After the dinner and the film, there will be a panel discussion that includes filmmaker Graham Meriwether, farmer Suzanne Nelson and other local farmers and influencers.

The Chef is The Farmer

The Chef is The Farmer

Rose veal done right.
On a special night in January, we are taking the meal all the way from the farm to plate by the same hands. Suzanne Nelson Karreman, owner and mother hen of Reverence Farms, prepares and serves a meal centered around a veal calf that she raised -- whose mother was the first calf born on her original homestead. This isn’t your typical veal. Quite the opposite, our veal calves spend their whole lives running with the cow herd, drinking all the whole milk they can from mama cows, having a socially normal bovine existence, and growing almost as big as their dams. Rose veal done in this manner is the only way to close the loop and make dairy sustainable and humane for farmer and animal alike. This is food as celebration of life, of knowing everything that went into getting meat on a plate and with reverence for every aspect of it. Please join us. Call to make your reservation: (336) 525-2266.
